What is an agora?

Twice a year around 600 to 800 AEGEE members from all over Europe gather at their general assembly, called the Agora. During the Agora the most important topics for AEGEE as an association are discussed, both the internal functioning and the vision of the network. As so many young people are gathered, this event is one of the best opportunities for AEGEE to work on its aims and goals.

The Agora is a very good example of what AEGEE as a network tries to be: a breeding ground for dedicated European citizens; those who have the ability to work and live together with different cultures, the ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and have a global outlook to the world.

The Agora has a number of different types of sessions, some mostly focused on the organisational items and some more focused on content for discussion. The main elements of the general assembly are the plenary sessions and the prytania. In a plenary session, all members of the Agora gather to ratify important decisions and to inform each other about various important projects and other things that take place in the association.

During the prytania, the participants split up in smaller groups to discuss some of the proposals and some other items to be voted upon more in depth.

An independent Chair Team that is elected by the Agora takes care of chairing all sessions. They are supported by a Juridical Commission, which makes sure that all procedures and juridical challenges that pop up during an Agora are handled properly.

Besides the official decision making sessions of the Agora, there are also many other input sessions, workshops and social events. This makes the Agora an event with a very high potential impact, both on its participants and on the environment in which it’s taking place.
